Artist Notes |
The artist states, "Having a background in realism, I found this caricature to be an enjoyable challenge. Initially, I studied the style of Herb Hake and noted prominent characteristics in his drawings: the simple circles for eyes, one line for the mouth, and his tendency to hide images. I began with realistic sketches of President Nook to familiarize myself with key features. Once these were familiar, I began turning these sketches into a cartoon. It took several attempts, but I ultimately found a way to represent President Nook in a style reminiscent of Hake. I lightly sketched the oval of the head and defined the key points to guide important facial features. With charcoal, I used smooth contour lines to create the final work. I spent a few hours creating this piece, which is a short amount of time for a drawing. However, Hake produced his works without guidelines, on stage, upside down, and while speaking over a matter of minutes. Understanding the process and its simplistic difficulty instilled in me a great respect for Hake's work." |
